Stress Ball — For Children Who Need to Press and Squeeze
A stress ball provides deep pressure stimulation — when the child squeezes the ball, calming signals are sent via proprioception. It’s the same principle as the effect of a weighted blanket, but in mini-format for the hands.
Best for children who:
- Clench their fists or tense their hands when stressed
- Hit or press against things when frustrated
- Need something to “release” tension on
- Are younger (3–6 years old) and cannot manage more advanced fidgets
Tip: Buy sets with different textures and resistances. Softer balls calm, firmer balls provide more input. Many children have a favorite — let them experiment.
Tangle — For Restless Hands That Want to Create and Shape
A Tangle is a chain of bendable plastic segments that can be formed into unlimited shapes. Unlike stress balls, it provides tactile variation — hands are constantly moving and doing something active without disturbing the surroundings.
Best for children who:
- Pick at things, tear paper, fiddle with everything within reach
- Have difficulty sitting still but are not as tense/frustrated
- Like to keep their hands moving while listening or watching TV
- Are 5 years or older
Tangles are extremely durable — they don’t break. This makes them a good investment compared to stress balls that can crack and leak filling.
My Advice — Get Both
Stress balls and Tangles address different needs. The child might need a stress ball when frustrated and a Tangle when concentrating on homework. A set with 5–10 stress balls plus a Tangle costs 150–250 SEK on Amazon — try them out and see what the child prefers.
At the respite care home, we usually have a small box with mixed fidgets available. Children choose what they need at the moment — this gives them control and increases the chance that they will actually use them.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are stress balls and Tangles allowed in school?
Generally yes — they are quiet and discreet. Talk to the teacher in advance and explain that it is an adaptive tool. If the child has a diagnosis, it might be included in their action plan. Avoid balls that bounce or squeak.
What age is a Tangle suitable for?
Tangle Junior (softer, rounder edges) is suitable from about 3 years old. A regular Tangle is suitable from 5–6 years old. Stress balls are suitable for all ages — choose the size according to hand size.
My stress ball cracked and leaked filling
This is common with cheap, poor-quality stress balls. Choose soft fabric stress balls (no water balls) or solid foam balls — they last longer and are safer. Check that the filling is non-toxic if you still buy liquid-filled ones.
